After a great opening scenes, the movie falls flat. I very much enjoyed Sobhana's luminous performance as Lakshmi and could sympathize with her feelings of isolation and frustration. He comes out cold, unfeeling and uptight — surely we are better than that as hubbies? The film takes a turn when Lakshmi, now alone at home, receives a call from the hospital. The same hands that point out the mistakes being commited doesn't go without touching the deeper core of our soul. Lakshmi is furious, because of the traditional way that she was brought up, and drives Robbie away; Divya is furious at this kind of interference. I'm a huge fan of hers and love her acting especially in Marupadiyum, Anjali and one of my all time favourites of hers, Mouna Ragam which i can watch a gazillion times and never tire of.
Too bad it backfired on her because of her husband's jealousy and insecurity. Director Revathy and her crew which consists only woman deserves cheers. . Mitr, which is all about alienation an average woman starts feeling when her daughter and lifemate starts blaming her to be orthodox and a nag; and hardly find time to understand her. I thought Mitr, My Friend was very good considering the fact that it was Revathi's debut film, as a director. Lakshmi, a traditional Indian woman, marries an American-Indian and lives in America with him and their daughter. Prithvi is angered because he finds out that Lakshmi had slapped Divya, and he is unable to do anything about it. Shobhana won best actor national awards for this movie, which I would go along. I still somehow like the ones who can run around trees and dance sorts cos they help us unwind and are less stressful to the mind to watch. She is in touch with her mitr all through.
Nasir Abdullah and Shobana in Mitr, My Friend The film opens with the marriage proceedings of a South Indian between Lakshmi and Prithvi Nasir Abdullah. I used to think she was a tambrahm. It is more appropriate in the countries like India, where it is still expected from woman to stay back at home and look after her family only, where she still considered to be a second citizen. The weak link, is why it took 17 years for shobhana to leave home and start self fulfilling activities. As an aside I also like Sripriya.

Illayaraja has done a great job, even after so many years, i still enjoys the music of Mitr. Only sensitive people can appreciate this movie. It's a film which is so much refreshing for all those who got a heart to empathise and understand problems of others. The whole idea of the film is that this chatfriend Lakshmi has been sharing her secrets with and getting ideas from and improving her life by turns out to be someone very surprising! Fortunately, the daughter's performance got better towards the end of the film but the director should have elicited better performances from everyone unless that was their best and the casting crew would have to take the blame for not finding better actors. The marriage is a happy union: Prithvi works hard at work, Lakshmi manages the home, and they grow to love one other deeply. Hats off to Revathi and her crew. When you deal with topics like raising second-generation children in a foreign country, marital unhappiness, and cultural confusion, there is so much room for humor and insight.
