One thing I like that this movie does is talk about the differences in the races was that a grammatically correct sentence? This is a much needed topic. The script is long, underdeveloped and it doesn't squarely state that one's identity is based on individuality, not on race, but, given the challenging subject matter—racism is an example of collectivism that remains prevalent— Something New is something to see. Were Brian black and Kenya named, I don't know, Paris, and if her family and friends were as rude to him, we'd be expected to find their behavior appalling. You and Tribute Publishing Inc. The two meet again at a party, and Kenya hires Brian to landscape her new home. In a fabulously entertaining sequence, they all do karaoke. Taking on an affair between a black woman and a white man, director Sanaa Hamri and writer Kriss Truner have carefully navigated the minefield of black middle class guilt, and that they make it through alive is some sort of miracle. Sanaa is lovely in the film. As a critic, I could not help but wonder how this interesting premise might have been better handled with the right people behind the camera. But the movie knows that if two people truly connect, that is a rare and precious thing and must be respected. Sanaa Lathan gives a superb performance, as does Simon Baker. Oh another one by pops. Would also like to find more movies by this director.
I was so moved by this film and could relate to so many things that happened, not including the monster, that I cried through the entire end credits. In a telling close-up, we see him rubbing earth through his hands in her overgrown garden. Those are valid concerns when you get involved in certain kinds of relationships. I can totally relate to the Kenya character and I can easily think of 10 other black women who probably can too. Their first date, a blind meeting in a Starbucks, is one of many broadly drawn interactions where Kenya overreacts simply because she's being seen in public with a white man.
I particularly liked the intimate, in tight close-ups, curiosity of their inter-racial discussions though we only learn about her Afro-centric academic family and not his ethnically neutral one , leading to him committing what Oprah says is the number one no-no: never ask an African-American woman about her hair.
